HotShot at Muswellbrook Coal
A HotShot(tm) blast was
conducted on the 5th of April 2006 at Muswellbrook Coal
Mine. This shot was located in Muswellbrook Open Cut #1
in the overburden above the Lewis Coal Seam. The aim was
to conduct a bigger than normal size blast and to collapse
overburden into the underground galleries within the Lewis
coal seam to allow safe mining of the overburden to proceed.
On top of this it was a requirement to keep vibration and
air blast within acceptable levels. The blasting in this
area was considered "hot" ground. MCC considers "hot" ground
as between 50 C & 70 C, no holes over 70 C were charged.
